Module 3 Part 3 - Transcript v3.pdf

Quiz answers from Module 2 - and further information.

2.1 - In the process of evolution, the triune brain came first.

FALSE (In the process of evolution, the reptilian brain came first. It is called the snake brain, responsible for the body systems)

2.2 - Which part of the brain deals with “emotion & memory”?

Answer - B - Limbic System

2.3 - The cognitive brain has some ability to override the emotional brain.

TRUE (The cognitive brain only has a limited ability to override the emotional brain, while the emotional brain can completely override the cognitive brain. There is a term called 'emotional hijack', or 'amygdala hijack', which means that if something very startling happens, the brain will instantly take control of the whole bodily function in order to respond to that.)

2.4 - It is the triune brain that has made humans the creatures that they are.

TRUE (The first form of land-living animals ( reptiles ) had the snake brain. The limbic system appeared as mammals took on varyingly long periods of nurturing their young. The cognitive brain, or neocortex, developed as humans beings started becoming more and more adaptive and able to manipulate their environment, not just react to it.)

2.5 - The amygdala is an organ of sensing thought.

FALSE (The amygdala is the part of the brain that momnitors/senses the emotional significance of everything that is happening inside and outside of the individual. )

2.6 - Experience and Emotions are linked in the brain.

TRUE (So, experience from the very first day of life and perhaps even the previous six months inside the womb, shapes the brain, and it shapes it on the basis of the emotional significance.)

2.7 - The amygdala are located in the neocortex (cognitive brain).

FALSE (The amygdala are areas of the brain found in the limbic system in the mammalian part of the triune brain. They are shaped like almonds, from which the word is derived, (αμυγδαλών or amygdalon means almond in ancient Greek). The amygdala (plural of amygdalon) are always referred to in the plural, though they are a single system, they are located one in each half of the brain).

2.8 - Does the brain process information....

Answer - D - Bottom-up (Information we sense and gather is processed through the brain from the bottom-up. It takes approx 85 milliseconds for the limbic system to react to new information, and a further 165 milliseconds for the 'thinking' part of our brain, the cortex, to become aware of it. At this stage the limbic system has already attached emotions to the thought. We can only 'know' we know something, if we already know it!)
